Citizenship by family

Applying through a parent or grandparent.

The official service is called Acquisition of Nationality of Origin by Choice. It is available to a person born abroad whose father, mother, grandfather, or grandmother was a Cabo Verdean national by birth.

Official core documents

  1. Declaration of NationalityUse the current form provided by the Consular Portal. For a minor, the declaration must be signed by the parents.
  2. Your birth certificateUse a recently issued certified copy. The portal warns applicants to pay attention to the certificate’s expiration date.
  3. Cabo Verdean family birth recordsIf applying through a parent, provide that Cabo Verdean parent’s birth certificate. If applying through a grandparent, the portal calls for the connecting parent’s birth certificate and the Cabo Verdean grandparent’s birth certificate.
  4. Identification documentBring a passport or another form of identification accepted by the consulate.
  5. Information about both parentsThe online application asks for complete information about the applicant’s mother and father. A non-Cabo Verdean parent’s birth certificate is not listed as a standard core attachment, but the consulate may request more documentation.

Passport renewal

Renew online or through a consular office.

The Consular Portal offers an online renewal process. In-person applicants are instructed to appear at a consulate with identification and their valid or expired passport.

01

Prepare identification

Have your old passport—even if expired—or another identification document accepted by the consulate.

02

Prepare digital items

For an online request, be ready to provide a compliant digital passport photo and biometric information. Some paths may also require a digitized signature.

03

Add special documents

For a minor, attach authorization signed by a parent or legal guardian. For a lost or stolen passport, attach the required loss or theft declaration.

04

Verify your identity

Complete payment and schedule the required video conference with a consular agent. The portal notes that an in-person visit may still be required.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers. Official next steps.

These short answers summarize official Cabo Verde sources. Open each question, then follow the linked government page for the most current requirements.

Where should I begin with a consular request?

Begin with Cabo Verde’s official Consular Portal. It organizes services for identification, nationality, civil and criminal records, powers of attorney, visas, declarations, and certificates.

Open the official Consular Portal →

How do I apply for or renew a Cabo Verdean passport?

The official portal provides both an online renewal process and in-person service. Prepare your old passport or an accepted identification document, follow the biometric and identity-verification instructions, and add authorization for a minor or a loss declaration when applicable. Requirements, fees, and delivery times can change.

See the renewal checklist on this page →

Does a baby or child need a passport to travel?

Yes. The official Consular Portal states that every traveler, including a baby, must have their own passport.

What is the CNI, and do I need it?

The CNI is Cabo Verde’s National Identification Card. The official FAQ states that it replaces the former identity card and is required when requesting consular services. Contact the consulate about applying and what identification to bring.

Where can I request a birth certificate or criminal record?

The official FAQ says these records may be requested in person at a consular post or online through the Consular Portal. Check the portal for current instructions, fees, and processing times.

What should I do if my Cabo Verdean passport is lost?

Report the loss to the police and keep the police report. The official FAQ says the report should be taken to the consular post when requesting a replacement. Contact the consulate first for the complete current requirements.

Do I need a visa or travel pre-registration for Cabo Verde?

Requirements depend on nationality, residency, trip purpose, and length of stay. The official FAQ directs travelers to the EASE platform for visitor pre-registration and visa information. Cabo Verdean nationals and foreign residents are treated differently, so confirm the rules that apply to your documents before booking.

Can the Society process my consular documents?

No. The Cape Verdean Santiago Society can help community members find official information, but it is not a consulate and cannot approve passports, citizenship, visas, records, or legal documents. Those requests must go through the Consular Portal or an authorized diplomatic or consular office.
